Wayne State awards honorary degrees to leaders driving change in Metro Detroit

Wayne State University has awarded honorary degrees to Jamie and Dr. Denise Jacob, recognizing their lifelong contributions and transformational impact to business, health care, education and philanthropy across Metro Detroit.

The honorary degrees were conferred during the Wayne State University Spring Commencement ceremony on Friday, May 2, 2025.

As leaders in both professional and philanthropic spheres, the Jacobs have dedicated their lives to expanding opportunity, reducing inequity and advancing well-being for others. Together, they exemplify the university’s highest values—service, scholarship and social impact.

Jamie Jacob serves as Principal and Chief Executive Officer of Ajax Paving Industries, Inc., and has long been engaged in civic leadership through organizations such as Detroit Drives Degrees and College Career & Beyond (formerly Midnight Golf).

Dr. Denise Jacob, a 1981 Master of Science in Nursing graduate from Wayne State, has made lasting contributions to the fields of nursing, holistic medicine and public health. Her career spans roles in critical care, academia and integrative medicine, and she has served as a board leader for Planned Parenthood of Michigan and other public health initiatives.

Their philanthropic work through the Jamie and Denise Jacob Family Foundation (JDJ Family Foundation) has awarded over $3.4 million in grant funding to more than a dozen Detroit-area organizations.

Most notably, their generosity has led to the creation of the Jacob Scholars Program at Wayne State’s College of Nursing—an initiative that has provided over $1.2 million in support for students from underrepresented and disadvantaged backgrounds.

The program offers financial assistance, academic resources and mentorship to empower students pursuing careers in nursing and improve health equity in underserved communities.

“The university is grateful for the Jacobs’ continued generosity and their vision for a stronger, healthier Detroit," said Laurie M. Lauzon Clabo, Ph.D., Wayne State Provost and Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs and former Dean of the College of Nursing. "Through the Jacobs Scholars Program, Wayne State continues to build on its commitment to preparing a diverse, equitable healthcare workforce that empowers the health of our urban neighborhoods."

Notably, all Jacob Scholars graduates have achieved a 100% pass rate on the NCLEX and have successfully entered the nursing workforce—many of whom are now practicing in the Detroit area.

Currently, 38 students are enrolled in the Jacob Scholars Program.

“Jamie and Denise Jacob have uplifted Detroit through a combination of visionary leadership and compassionate action,” said Ramona Benkert, PhD, ANP-BC, FAANP, Dean of the Wayne State College of Nursing. “This honorary degree is a celebration of their enduring legacy—and their commitment to creating a healthier, more equitable future for all.”
