The Wayne State University College of Nursing will hold its annual Urban Health Research Conference from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday, April 16, in the WSU Student Center Building.   

The theme of the 2025 conference is “Advancing Health Equity through Community Engaged Research and Innovation.”  

Researchers, practitioners, and scholars from all disciplines are invited to a dynamic conference emphasizing meaningful community engagement and building relationships to address disparities. 

Conference attendees will engage with speakers on topics such as foundations of community-participatory research, strategies for developing community partnerships, and engaging the community in developing research to improve the health of vulnerable populations.

The keynote will feature Dr. Urmeka Jefferson, PhD, RN, FAWHONN, who will focus on engaging the community in developing interventions to support breastfeeding women. Dr. Umeka Jefferson leads innovative breastfeeding research for African American parents, using technology that reflects their cultural traditions. Her work advances public health by improving breastfeeding duration and reducing mortality for underserved populations.  

A complimentary continental breakfast and lunch will be provided. New to the conference this year, the event will conclude with a wine and cheese reception. 

This continuing education activity will be submitted to the Ohio Nurses Association, an Ohio Board of Nursing Approver (OBN-001-91) for 4.75 contact hours. The continuing education certificate will be available electronically after attendance at the entire conference, viewing nine posters, and submission of the survey evaluating all of the conference program. No one with the ability to control the content of this activity has a relevant financial relationship with an ineligible company.
