As members of the college's educational team, preceptors are key to the success of Wayne State advanced practice nurse students who will become some of the best and brightest advanced practice providers in Michigan!

How much experience as a nurse practitioner is required before I can become a preceptor?
To become a preceptor, you should have a minimum of one-year experience as a nurse practitioner or be a board-certified physician.

How do I become a preceptor?
First, confirm with your supervisor or director that you have approval to host a student at your organization. Then, complete the online application and attach a copy of your CV or resume. If you meet the qualifications and there is an opening for a preceptor in your specialty, you will be contacted.

How does WSU College of Nursing approve organizations as a clinical site?
If an organization is suitable for a clinical rotation, a representative of the organization must sign an affiliation agreement with Wayne State University College of Nursing.

How many opportunities are there each year to be a preceptor?
WSU College of Nursing has three semesters each academic year: fall, winter and spring/summer. View the academic calendar.

Is preceptor training available?
College of Nursing preceptors have access to online resources, including NurseTim®, which provides hands-on interactive training and webinars.

How do I handle issues or concerns about a student?
Begin by speaking with the student about your mutual expectations. Often, issues can be resolved through communication. After meeting with the student, if you still have concerns, contact the student's clinical faculty for guidance and support.

Do I need additional liability insurance?
No, you do not need additional liability insurance beyond your current policy. WSU College of Nursing provides liability insurance for students. Midwifery students are required to secure their own policies.

What type of feedback or progress report do I provide the student?
Evaluation and feedback forms vary by course. The student's clinical faculty will provide this information.

Are preceptors compensated?
No, College of Nursing preceptors are not paid; however, there are many other benefits, including online training and education. Approximately 4-6 weeks after the end of the semester, you will receive a certificate reporting your preceptor hours.
