Dr. Ramona Benkert receives MI-AHEC Distinguished Service Award
The College of Nursing’s Dr. Ramona Benkert was recently recognized for her role in the Michigan Area Health Education Center (MI-AHEC) program at Wayne State University and the State of Michigan.
Benkert received the MI-AHEC Distinguished Service Award during the first annual Friends of Michigan Area Health Education Center Banquet held in June. The award was presented by Dr. Robert Frank, who noted that Benkert exemplifes MI-AHEC's mission in her role as caregiver, teacher, and principal investigator of the program. Accepting the award, Benkert said, "I'm doing what I think I was put on this earth to do. And I'm really grateful to have something that I'm passionate about and that I think is profoundly important."
The interprofessional AHEC leadership team at Wayne State, along its five regional centers, facilitates and partners with individuals and other organizations throughout Michigan to recruit, train, and retain a diverse workforce of health professionals committed to increasing access to primary care in underserved areas.
MI-AHEC was established in 2010 by Wayne State University and was funded through a U.S. Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) grant. For more information see miahec.wayne.edu.
