Do I have to have military healthcare experience to eligible for the B.S.N. for Veterans?
Healthcare experience is not required, but students with military healthcare experience can potentially be able to test out of two nursing courses.
How many college credits do I need before I can apply for the B.S.N. for Veterans?
Students are required to have 30 college credits.
Do I need to have all of the nursing prerequisites completed prior to applying to the program?
Applicants do not need to have all of prerequisites completed prior to applying to the B.S.N. for Veterans. However, students must have all prerequisites completed prior to starting nursing core courses to be prepared for the rigor of the program. Prerequisites can be taken at Wayne State University or transfer from another institution as long as they meet university transfer requirements. GPA requirement for prerequisites is a 3.0 or higher.
Are students allowed to repeat prerequisites?
Yes, students can repeat prerequisites if they fail a course. However, students must understand that repeating multiple prerequisite courses may prevent their ability to start nursing core courses, which may result in the need to reapply to the program.
Who determines what military courses count toward completing a B.S.N.
The program director reviews every candidate’s academic and joint service transcripts to determine which courses could potentially count toward completing a B.S.N. Military healthcare courses may have provided the student with enough knowledge to test out two nursing courses.
Once accepted into the B.S.N. for Veterans, will military obligations be taken into consideration?
Military responsibilities will be honored while students are enrolled in the program.
How long is the nursing program?
The B.S.N. for Veterans follows the sequencing of the B.S.N. Second Career/Degree pathway which is 5 semesters with full-time enrollment.
Any general education courses a student needs to meet University requirements will need to be completed after the nursing core courses.
Does deployment overseas count as the University Cultural Competency requirement?
No, deployment overseas does not count as cultural competency by University policy.
