Student Commons

Investing in student success

The Wayne State University College of Nursing understands the importance of informal learning, much of which takes place outside the classroom. Even with modernizations to the Cohn Building, many students must still find study space in hallways and stairwells. With this in mind, the college is developing an informal learning space for students.

The Cohn Building needs a community hub where students can meet, work in teams, study effectively and collaborate on projects as they work toward becoming professionals. That space is the Students Commons. More than a brick-and-mortar project, it's an investment in student success.

Watch the video below to learn more from Dean Laurie M. Lauzon Clabo about how a contemporary space for informal learning will impact nursing student success.

An inviting, flexible space

The Student Commons will be located on the Cohn Building's third floor and will be an inviting, flexible space where nursing students can meet, study and engage in ways that are currently not possible. The commons will have different areas, or "neighborhoods," suited for different purposes. It will also feature a design and focus on technology essential to helping students thrive in a modern educational environment.

The Student Commons will bring students together as a cohort, encouraging professional socialization. Learning will be accelerated as students work together in groups, a major focus of the nursing curriculum. As undergraduates connect with graduate students, they will learn about different paths in nursing and broaden their career possibilities.

For all its academic benefits, the Student Commons also will be a place where hardworking students can relax in a comfortable environment filled with natural light, and will serve as the college's social hub.

Your opportunity to support nursing students

The Student Commons is more than a physical renovation project — it is an investment in student success. The college is fully depending on philanthropy to make the Student Commons happen and is seeking to raise $500,000 by 2020, the College of Nursing's 75th anniversary. Make your gift today!
