Bio Sketch

Dr. Smith's philosophy of teaching is the constructivist pedagogy that emphasizes active discovery learning on the parts of her students, influenced by the work of Jean Piaget from the 1930, who pioneered the approach with the view that knowledge is something the learner “constructed” for themselves rather than passively absorbed. Guided by the principles of this theory that knowledge is constructed, learning is an active process, teachers seek and value student’s points of view, and motivation is the key to learning, the philosophy serves as the basis of Dr. Smith's foundational approach to teaching and classroom atmospheres. Dr. Smith helps students become active leaners by creating a space that involves active learning in a motivating and safe place. Her expectation of students consists of professionalism, strong work ethic, teamwork and a willingness to actively learn. by setting the example of professionalism that encourages questions, building rapport and motivating students to learn, Dr. Smith expects students to demonstrate a strong work ethic and willingness to learn through active engagement that they can utilize in the classroom, clinical settings and future nursing practice.
