CON Receives Workforce Diversity Grant
July 12, 2012
The College of Nursing has received a $993,994 Nursing Workforce Diversity grant from the federal Health and Resources Services Administration (HRSA) to expand nursing education opportunities for individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds. This federal program provides stipends and scholarship to help students become registered nurses, and prepare practicing registered nurses for advanced nursing education.
The Nursing Workforce Diversity program was first implemented at the College from 2004-2006 when 27 students received scholarships. The new three-year grant will assist 146 students with a comprehensive support system. A pre-entry program will help students as they progress from pre-nursing courses into professional nursing courses and the College’s retention program will be enhanced to help students from under-represented and/or economically disadvantaged backgrounds. In addition, eight students with financial need who have participated in the pre-entry program and have proven academic success will receive scholarships.
