Where Can My PhD Take Me? BEST Program Orientation

WSU Graduate Students and Postdocs interested in discovering where their PhD can take them should attend to learn about the BEST program, Broadening Experiences in Scientific Training [BEST]. Various speakers from the graduate school at the university will discuss the 2015 BEST Program Orientation.   WSU's BEST program helps doctoral students and Postdocs from all departments explore career opportunities beyond traditional academia, such as private sector jobs that require doctoral-level research skills, and research-oriented jobs in state and federal government.  Joining BEST is voluntary but could be highly beneficial to a graduate student career.  This introductory seminar will help you decide whether the program is right for you.  Read about the BEST grant in "Transforming Training to Reflect the Workforce." We will introduce the Broadening Experiences in Scientific Training [BEST] program, designed to assist students in exploring career opportunities outside of traditional academic domains. Details will be provided about BEST’s slate of activities for fall 2015 and spring 2016. Where Can My PhD Take Me? Careers in Communication

Where can my PhD take me in the field of Communication?  A dialogue about career paths at the intersection of bioscience and communication. Panelists from multiple industries will share their experiences in launching their post-doctoral careers in communication. This event is the second in a series of career exploration panel discussions to be offered during the fall 2015 by the BEST program, an NIH-funded initiative to assist WSU doctoral students and postdoctoral scientists find out more about careers outside of traditional academic settings. This session will focus on employment in communication, particularly health communication and scientific/medical writing.  Presenters include a local publishing professional and an alumna working for the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) in Atlanta as well as WSU faculty with a specialty in health communication.  Panelists will discuss the scope of their current work, the skills and expertise required in the domain of health and scientific communication, and the transition to nonacademic careers. The session will conclude with a Q&A moderated by WSU faculty Prof. Judith Moldenhauer, Associate Professor of Graphic Design and Interim Associate Dean in the College of Fine, Performing and Communication Arts, and Assistant Professor of English Donnie Sackey. Where can my PhD take me in the field of Government?  A dialogue about career paths at the intersection of bioscience and government. Panelists from federal and local government will share their experiences in launching their post-doctoral careers. This event is the sixth in a series of career exploration seminars to be offered during the fall 2015 by the BEST program, an NIH-funded initiative to assist WSU doctoral students and postdoctoral scientists find out more about careers outside of traditional academic research settings. This session will focus on employment in government at the local, state and federal levels. Panelists include scientists with expertise in careers in government, the director of Southeastern Michigan Health Association, and the head of the Detroit branch of the US Patent and Trademark Office.  They will discuss the scope of their current work, the skill set required for government positions, and how to successfully make the transition to nonacademic careers. The session will conclude with a Q&A with faculty facilitators Dr. Christy Chow, Professor of Chemistry, and Dr. Matt Ouellett, Associate Provost and Director, Office of Teaching and Learning. The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) Board of Commissioners acted at its meeting on October 10-12, 2013 to grant accreditation of the baccalaureate and Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) degree programs in Nursing at Wayne State University for a term of 10 years, extending to December 31, 2023, and to the master's programs in nursing for a term of 5 years, extending to December 31, 2018. The next on-site evaluation for the baccalaureate and DNP programs will take place in the spring of 2023. The next on-site evaluation for the master's programs will take place in the spring of 2018.
